Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Council for Women’s Concerns?
    • The Council for Women’s Concerns is a WVU-sponsored body invested in improving conditions of women in the WVU community. The Council for Women’s Concerns supports activities which highlight the concerns and accomplishments of women such as the Mary Catherine Buswell Award, the Women of Color Luncheon during Diversity Week, and Champagne for SANEs.
  • What types of memberships exists?
    • Members include WVU faculty, staff, students, ex-officio and community members. Members are required to attend Council meetings and serve on at least committee. Members have voting rights.
    • Affiliate membership is available to individuals who have served the maximum amount of term limits and who are interested in continuing to support the Council or anyone who would like to support a committee but does not have the time to be a full member. Affiliate members can participate in multiple committees but must participate in at least one. Affiliate members do not have voting rights on the full Council.

    • Affiliate members are expected to attend and participate in subcommittee meetings but are welcome to attend full council meetings.
  • How long does the application take to complete?
    • The application should take approximately thirty minutes to complete.
  • How often does the Council meet?
    • Council meetings are held once per month from September through May. Committee meetings vary.
  • Can I attend a Council for Women’s Concerns Meetings if I’m not a member or an affiliate member?
    • Yes, everyone is welcome to attend and participate in our monthly meetings. The meeting schedule is available on our Events page.
  • What kinds of committees exist?
    • Committees include the Executive Committee, Outreach Committee, Campus Climate Committee, Power-Based Personal Violence Prevention/Education Committee, Wellness Committee, Awards and Membership Committee, and Women of Color Committee. You can find out more about the goals of each committee on our Committees page.
  • Can I be on more than one committee?
    • As a member or affiliate member, you can join more than one committee, as your time and energy allow.
  • Do I need to know someone from the Council to become a member?
    • No. Previously, we allowed applicants the option to share the name of a current Council member who could endorse their application. We removed this option from the application, as it implies that applicants with an endorsement may receive preferential treatment. As a Council, we recognize the exclusive nature of this question and are actively working on ways to make our membership more inclusive.
  • How do I find more information about the Council?
